Yoga, as an industry, has become so commercialized that it’s often hard to find any trace of the rich history, spiritual and medicinal lineage of the practice. Between the clothing, accessory and merchandise market and the focus primarily on physical asana, it can be easy to forget that yoga originated and still belongs to another culture.
At BBY we want to be sure we hold space to acknowledge our role in this process and are actively aware of our responsibility to arrive daily to our mats with humility and gratitude.
There are a handful of ways that we work to honor and acknowledge where we received this practice. Limited BBY merchandise is no exception.
We do not sell yoga merchandise in the studio or for profit, but rather as an awareness tool for reaching a broader audience with the limited garments we make available. It is our desire to create a space where our students can simply focus on yoga, on intention, and on breath, without distractions. We strive to be mindful of our clothing and accessories and how we use them. If we choose to wear or use clothing or accessories that display Indigenous/Hindu Gods, Goddesses and Deities, we challenge ourselves to respect and know the meaning of the symbols we are using and we work.
