About Us.

What We’re About:

OUR MISSION

Using the practices of yoga asana, meditation and pranayama, we strive to build greater understanding and connections to self, the community and the world through inquiry, curiosity and action.

As a team of teachers, we are a tight knit group, committed to growing in our practice, our personal evolution as humans and our studio community. We are works in progress toward anti-racism, equity and accessibility. The work is deep and wide and we are here for all of it. Slow and steady, foot on the gas.

Just like our yoga, we are a work in progress, a journey. Our experience as teachers, facilitators, guides, and as a studio is evolving. We believe in always learning, always growing and always challenging ourselves.

This means embracing the valleys and the peaks. It means we explore our biases, question the way things have always been done, examine our habits and struggles and commit to becoming familiar with that space outside of our own comfort zone. We value feedback, both constructive and complementary and we honor each other’s differences, styles and experiences because after all, isn’t that what makes life so special? In some ways, it becomes clear that our differences are truly the only thing that unite us.

  • Before we get into the who we are as a studio, we need to recognize where we physically reside in space and we would like to begin by paying our respect to the Arapahoe, Ute, Cheyenne and Sioux bands, tribes and Nations, and the Indigenous people of Denver County, and all of Colorado. We acknowledge the ancient holders of this unceded ancestral land on which we and our families live, work and play and we offer deep respect and gratitude to the elders of this land, present past, and future. We would like to acknowledge that sovereignty was never granted, that Native peoples were massacred in Colorado and forcibly removed from the land, and that any acknowledgement made is only the first in a long line of actions toward truth and that reconciliation.

  • As a studio, we choose to acknowledge our bias – both implicit and explicit. We believe that privilege is a force multiplier. It has the ability to corrupt, inspire greed, create fear and drive scarcity. It can also be used to remove the barriers that divide and oppress us. Structural inequities perpetuate trauma and prevent access to healing. We believe that part of healing is acknowledging the intersectional lens of privilege and working to better listen to and support, when appropriate, those who are disproportionately impacted by these systems.

Our life experiences, beliefs and values shape who we are and how we interact in the world. For example, my life lens is that of a white, cis-gender, able-bodied, woman born and raised in Colorado and as the studio owner, means that I’m constantly working to identify where I'm located in relation to power and privilege and how that informs my role and my responsibility to and for issues like gentrification, racism, advocacy and activism. As a yoga practitioner, it means I strive to be aware of how my actions affect and may actively, if not consciously, harm other people and what it means to truly embrace and work toward inclusivity. As a mother, it means I feel a responsibility to raise an actively anti-racist, kind, brave, and mindful child.

We all have bias. As a studio and teachers, we do our best to be aware of the bias we bring to our interactions and experiences. This - just like our yoga practice - is a process. It takes continued practice, and a willingness and commitment to try and view things from a different lens than our own.

We respect and value the experiences that make each of us who we are, honoring that we likely haven’t lived that experience and so are committed to finding ways to discuss, embrace and hopefully grow through those ideas that may challenge us in our quest for equal justice.

  • BBY is dedicated to working toward anti-racism daily, and continually reassessing what it means to be ‘in the work.’ Yoga has become a largely appropriated practice of the privileged, but we are committed to strengthening our community by actively working to make our space and yoga more accessible, while also learning, honoring and acknowledging the roots of this, for most of us, ‘borrowed’ practice.

We currently address this in a few ways 1) we make no apologies for our stand in speaking out against inequity. We have a lot to learn and unlearn but we are committed to the process. 2) we strive to have accessible pricing, many options and free classes and will work with you to find a situation that allows you to be part of our community in a sustainable way. 3) our studio spaces are free from culturally appropriated images, symbols or merchandise. 4) we offer a wide variety of classes for all skill levels and also acknowledge we have more learning and work to do in order to be truly accessible to every body.

    We are evolving.

  • Connection through Community

Our offerings are anchored to relationships first. We are a neighborhood studio that prides itself on serving those in proximity to us while still asking questions about who is benefitting from our classes, who is not in the room and who is missing out on the offering and if there are opportunities to more directly relate back to strengthening broader community and increasing access and equity. We seek to strengthen the community and increase access to yoga as a tool for liberation of all.

Our offerings work to center the community, focus on outreach and provide ways to increase connection to local organizations, schools, nonprofits and others like-minded.

    Engaging with Integrity

We strive to act in the world with humility and integrity and are first and foremost unassuming and modest  – we strive to offer many class styles and approachable free and donation-based classes and events and are mindful in the way in which we speak in our classes and market our events with the images and graphics and language we choose to use.

We strive to honor the cultural heritage of yoga with understanding and intention and work to ensure that we are growing in our knowledge and that this tradition is practiced with spiritual integrity, and appreciation.

The studio as a whole, AND all offerings have a minimum 5% give-back of profits or a comparable service component.

    Seeking Growth through Curiosity

We have so much to learn every day about so many things and the process is huge, humbling and exciting. There are opportunities to be better every day and so many situations that arise that unintentionally cause both harm and that provide opportunities for repair.

Every time we engage with a new way of understanding we are grateful for the chance to learn something new. We will take every one of these chances that we are lucky enough to have illuminated and illustrated so that we can keep working toward evolution and progress in the future.

WHO WE ARE: OUR VISION

We desire to be a beacon so that others may have the space to do the hard work of being human and to be able to show up as their most authentic selves.

BBY’s teachers, students, and the neighborhood we live in are all integral to who we are and how we exist within the larger yoga community. Walking in to a class at BBY, whether it is your first time or your 500th should be a special, welcoming, challenging and completely unpretentious experience. Our goal is to help you connect to the grit you already have inside of you and the grace that we believe we could all benefit from extending to ourselves and each other.

More About us

  • We are a gently heated, vinyasa flow studio. We use infrared radiant heat to warm our room to a comfortable and beneficial 88 degrees. While you will certainly notice that you are practicing in a warm room, it should never feel oppressive. Our goal by heating our space with this specific type of heat and to this temperature is to help facilitate a healthy immune response and regeneration of our body’s tissues, muscles and joints through increased circulation, oxygenation and detoxification.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEATED VINYASA YOGA AND 'HOT' YOGA?

These are two different styles within the same family of yoga (Hatha Yoga). Hot or Bikram Yoga is a fixed sequence of 26 concentrated postures practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees. Vinyasa Flow is a dynamic style of yoga focused on synchronizing breath with continuous movement - each sequence aligns with inhalations and exhalations.

At Better Buzz, the sequences you practice will be tied to music in a room heated to between 85-95 degrees, depending on the number of students.

  • BETTER BUZZ IS DIFFERENT

Unlike many heated yoga studios, at Better Buzz, you will experience infrared heating panels. These panels heat like the sun, warming your body from within and providing a therapeutic, deep penetrating, detoxifying form of heat which expels toxins, heavy metals and pollutants from the body, providing significant benefits.

FAR infrared heat promotes a stronger immune system, better cardiovascular health, and it also speeds up the healing process in soft tissue injuries such as tears, pulls, and sprains. The penetrating heat of FAR infrared heat therapy helps heal scars, wounds, and cuts, it also smoothes skin’s texture, lessens coarseness, and reduces pore size.

Infrared heat penetrates the skin and gets into the cells. This type of heat rejuvenates and detoxifies the body on a cellular level. We use this particular type of heating system specifically to benefit the health of our students.

BENEFITS OF USING FAR INFRARED HEAT:

    • Reduces stress and fatigue

    • Strengthens the cardiovascular system

    • Heals injuries faster and more efficiently

    • Relieves pain and migraine headaches

    • Eases joint pain and stiffness

    • Relaxes muscles and increases flexibility

    • Deep cleanses skin naturally

    • Removes toxins and mineral waste

    • Improves the immune system

    • Increases metabolism

    • Removes heavy metals, toxins and pollutants from the tissues

    * Please note, while our heated classes are considered safe and therapeutic for healthy individuals, it is always recommended that you check with your doctor or a medical professional before practicing if you have any concerns. Because younger students are not able to regulate their body temperature as well as adults, students under 16 are not permitted to practice at BBY and those who are 16-18 must be accompanied by an adult. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause!
